CORE VALUES

Imago Dei: We believe all people are made in the image of God and desire an answer to the question, “Who am I?” (Genesis 1:26-27; Colossians 3:10)

Bible: We believe in the living Word of God and enthusiastically share its truth. (John 1:1-5; Hebrews 4:12; James 1:22-25; Psalm 19:7-11; Psalm 119)

Identity: We are committed to helping people become devoted followers of Christ and desire to help them find their identity in Him. (Colossians 2:6-7, 3:10; Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 2:20)

Spirit: We encourage the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer, and encourage a “life in the Spirit” and the use of the gifts of the Spirit. This work of the Spirit empowers believers for a life of service, and is a guide and comfort. (Acts 1:4, 5, 8; 1 Corinthians 12:1-31; Acts 2:37-38, John 7:37-39, Galatians 5:16-18)

Journey: When a person enters into a relationship with Christ, the Spirit of God immediately begins to transform them. We are passionate about caring for people: body, soul, and spirit, and want to help throughout this journey of transformation. (1 Thessalonians 5:23; Philippians 12:12-13; Galatians 5:22-23; Galatians 2:20)

Worship: God reveals Himself to us through His Word; through the active, personal role He takes in our lives; and through His creation. Our worship is a response to this revelation of God and is expressed through our devotion to Him, the way we serve and love others, and the giving of our time and resources. (2 Samuel 6, Colossians 3:15-17; Romans 12:1; Psalm 19:1-2; Psalm 103:1-6)

Prayer: Prayer is the essence of our communion with God. It is our worship of Him, our desire to see His purpose accomplished, and an expression of our dependence on God. It is an ongoing surrender to His work in our life. As we pray, we are brought back into alignment with Him. (Matthew 6:5-13; John 15:1-11; Hebrews 4:14-16; 1 John 5:13-15)

Community: Connection and belonging are deep human needs. We are committed to building and championing authentic relationships within our faith, our families, and the surrounding community. (Acts 2:42-47; 1 Peter 3:8; Colossians 3:9-17; Galatians 5:14)

Service: The result of God’s work in our lives should be active service toward others that flows from a servant’s heart. This can be expressed in many different ways and comes through the use of all God has given us; our time, our talents, and our resources. (Matthew 20:28; Matthew 25:35-34; John 13:1-17; Romans 12:9-13; Galatians 5:13; 1 Peter 4:10)

Missio Dei: Through mercy, love, and justice for all humankind, we get to be a part of God’s mission of redemption. (Colossians 3:12-14; Micah 6:8) Through God in us, we actively pursue a world impact through community investment, missions, and church multiplication. (Acts 1:8; Matthew 28:16-20; Matthew 5:13-16; Mark 16:15, Colossians 1:28-29)

THE VISION

A church and center creating space for community, transformation, and impact.

We envision Essence Place to be both a church and a community center. We began by offering interest meetings and gatherings in our home. From the start, our focus has been building relationships and integrating our family into the community.

In short, we desire to not just be a part of the community, but to belong to the community. This has also been the starting place for our Launch Team, and has allowed us to begin to see growth.
We have begun to establish a presence in our local neighborhood through the weekly rental of Charter Oak International Academy for our Sunday gatherings.

Initially, Essence Place is operating in partnership with both Reach Northeast and the Southern New England Ministry Network of the Assemblies of God.

Through this partnership, 501c3 status for Essence Place has been obtained. The long-term goal (future-oriented) is to also pursue a separate 501c3 for a non-profit community center (Essence Center).

Together, Essence Place and Essence Center will work in partnership to impact and care for the West Hartford and Greater Hartford communities. In the present, the church and community center operates simultaneously through Essence Place.

We believe that when the power of community and inward transformation takes place, a vibrant outward impact will follow. We cannot wait to see amazing things happen as we step out in faith, and pursue this vision!

THE MISSION

Community is more than geography. It is time invested in strengthening the lives and experiences of others.

Missio Dei

As Christ followers, we are given the greatest invitation that could ever be received. We are invited to join God’s redemptive work in all of creation. God actively and passionately pursues His creation, and through His Spirit is working in humankind to redeem and restore them to Him.

Therefore, the pursuit of every believer should be the total surrender of self in response to God’s unceasing work in all of creation - accepting an invitation to enter the missio Dei (the mission of God). Missio Dei is expressed through mercy, love, and justice for self and all of humankind. And, although God uses many different creative ways for his plan of redemption, creating churches remains a gospel-centered approach.

Process

God has given the vision of a two-pronged approach. In short, Essence Place will be a church and community center. We desire to build community and relationship by providing not only worship services, but throughout the week: groups, activities, and events purposed to promote wellness and balance within individuals and families – body, soul, and spirit.

We believe that God has led us to establish a presence in the community through the week, so that we may begin to be meet needs in the community that connect with a person’s whole self. This will build relationship, belonging, and trust, which will form a strong faith community out of this foundation.

We don’t desire to simply attract people with activity; we desire to develop relationship that leads to deeply transformed lives in Christ.

How will we do this? Initially, Essence Place will consist of small groups, classes, events and faith-focused gatherings geared toward caring for people holistically (body, soul, and spirit). We believe that as relationship and community is developed, Essence Place will grow forming larger gatherings for worship.

Why West Hartford?

West Hartford is a community-oriented town with lots of life and vitality, and a strong potential to affect change in its surrounding communities due to its high rate of education and affluence. Unfortunately, according to the Percept Group Inc. there is an estimated:

  • 44.3% of people not affiliated with any church or religion
  • 30.5% of people somewhat involved with faith
  • 25.7% of people strongly involved with faith

Research has shown that the vast majority of those who are affiliated with faith are only interested in being recreationally involved. In other words, the focus is lots of activity and not necessarily deeply transformed lives wholly devoted to Christ. What they are interested in is personal, lifestyle, health and balance.

Essence Place desires to be a place of community that will care for people in such a way that they discover the vital importance spirituality and faith plays in the overall health of a person. This faith community will focus on holistic transformation (body, soul, and spirit), believing that the overflow will be a strong, vibrant faith community that will lovingly and authentically impact the world around them.

THe Mind Map

The vision for holistic transformation will have many avenues for expression through community care. The mind map below gives a "brain storming" view of the elements within the vision for Essence Place.

LEADERSHIP

Lead Pastors

REVEREND BRADLEY CAUSEY

Brad is an ordained minister with the Assemblies of God and holds a Master of Arts in Practical Theology from Regent University.

Over the last decade in vocational ministry, Brad has served the local church as a staff pastor overseeing worship arts, small groups, family ministries, technical support, and various other areas of service as needed. Prior to full-time pastoral work, Brad has served on the regional, district, and national levels for the Assemblies of God. This past work experience was alongside the Superintendent of the Southern New England Ministry Network, the Assemblies of God Church Multiplication Network, and U.S. Missions for the Assemblies of God. These pivotal ministry support roles have given Brad a perspective of church ministry beyond the walls of the local church and a life-changing commitment to leading as a pastor with a missional worldview.

Brad believes the church should be a place to not only encounter or experience God but to also experience true life transformation and a growing faith. When faith is expressed in authentic ways, the present world is changed for the better. He has a passion to see the Arts used to make an impact on a person's heart and life, and at the same time enable worship of God.

Personally, Brad and Christan have three energetic children, Cavin, Paxton, and Havyn. Brad loves playing together as a family and drinking a great cup of coffee.

REVEREND CHRISTAN CAUSEY

Christan graduated from Evangel University with a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education (emphasis in Theatre and Communications), and a minor in Biblical Studies. She is an ordained minister with the Assemblies of God.

Christan is passionate about three things: God, her family, and ministry. Christan desires to see the church communicate Christ's love and grace in excellence. Her greatest passion is to help those that have been broken by life's difficulty to experience Christ's beautiful grace and healing. And as a result experience the abundant life He offers.

She enjoys time with her family, a good book, and writing for her blog (www.christancausey.com).
